Beetroot papad is a variant of papad that incorporates beetroot, a nutritious and vibrant vegetable, into the traditional papad recipe. It offers a unique flavor and color to the snack. While onion papad is more common, beetroot papad is gaining popularity due to its health benefits and appealing appearance.
To make beetroot papad, grated or pureed beetroot is added to the mixture of lentil flour (such as urad dal or moong dal flour), spices, and salt. The spices used can vary, but common choices include cumin, coriander, red chili powder, and asafoetida. The beetroot and spices are mixed well with the lentil flour to form a dough.
The dough is then rolled out into thin circles or discs and left to dry in the sun or under a fan until they become firm. Just like with onion papad, commercial manufacturers may use mechanical dryers for faster and consistent drying.
When the papads are completely dry, they can be stored and fried or roasted whenever desired. To prepare beetroot papads, they can be deep-fried in hot oil until they puff up and turn crispy. Alternatively, you can roast them on a tawa (flat griddle) or in the oven until they become crisp.
Beetroot papads retain the distinct earthy flavor of beetroots along with the spices used in the dough. They offer a visually appealing reddish-purple color and are a good way to incorporate the health benefits of beetroot into your diet. Beetroot is known for its high nutritional value, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Beetroot papads can be enjoyed as a snack on their own or served with chutneys, dips, or yogurt. They provide a crunchy and flavorful addition to meals or can be enjoyed as a standalone snack.
